::Thanks and Props to Chris Cuthbert::

Hey, thanks Chris!

Chris Cuthbert is the Canadian Sports Broadcaster who can be heard here doing the play by play analysis on my Athens K1 500m race with Scott Logan.  He is shown in the above picture with his Gemini Award for best Play by Play from 1998, and he also won sports broadcaster of the year in 2004, and I was honoured to present him with that Award.  I didn't just want to thank him for that, he also called Sidney Crosby's "Golden Goal" in Vancouver, and that is the topic of this 20Questions interview.  I want to thank Chris for his answer on Question #14... I'm honoured that he thought my race was so memorable (it sure was for me too!!)... and his call made it all the more exciting for Canadians too.

So thanks, Chris for being such an important pinnacle of Canadian Sports Broadcasting, and for helping make the sports you call so awesome for those watching (and those involved!).  Canadians love watching your broadcasts because you're a real fan, so knowledgeable and genuinely involved, and it's always about the athletes!

So thanks, and Oh yeah... Happy Holidays everyone!

::NOVEMBER 19th 2010::

Today is a great day!  85 years ago my mom's mother was born.  My Nana had a great birthday lunch out in her trendy St. Lawrence neighbourhood stomping grounds with my mom and bro.  She's an awesome lady and everyone loves her so much (especially me, but especially everyone) so I thought I'd give her a big vankayak.com happy 85th Birthday up here on the blog.  Happy Birthday Nana!

Another reason today rocks is because I'm pluggin' away on the kilometers down here in Florida and it's going really well.  This week we'll paddle more kms than last, and the same will hopefully be true of the next two weeks.  I have a magic number in mind for fall kms this year... when I hit it, I'll let you know!

Third and final reason today is wicked is because my new CBC Radio 3 Podcast dropped and it's tight.  CLICK RIGHT HERE or on the photo below to have a listen, or to download it onto your favourite portable listening device and listen while you are running, sitting on the subway, or juggling chainsaws.

The rad CBC R3 dudes did this little picture up. Click and Listen So it's a good day.  I hope tomorrow will be great!  Make yourself a great one!

::Article about my visit to New Central School::

Olympic champion teaches kids about Right to Play

By Herb Garbutt, Oakville Beaver

Olympic champion teaches kids about Right to Play. LET’S PLAY: Olympic champion kayaker Adam van Koeverden directs New Central Public School students through a game of elephant ball Monday at the school. Van Koeverden visited New Central to tell students about Right to Play, an organization that creates social change in communities affected by war and poverty through games and sport. Adam van Koeverden could easily be spending the afternoon demonstrating to the students of New Central Public School how he powers a kayak through the water faster than just about anyone in the world.

Instead, he is standing with five students, each of them holding hands with the people across from them, creating a massive tangle of arms. One by one, they work to unravel their arms. Within a minute or two, they are standing in a circle holding hands with the person next to them, having never let go of each other.

Van Koeverden then sends the students off to teach the game to their classmates. It’s a game that Right to Play has taught to more a million children worldwide. The Right to Play organization helps create social change in communities affected by war and poverty through games and sport. More than simply giving children an opportunity to kick a ball around, though, Right to Play’s programs teach hygiene, disease prevention, conflict resolution and cooperation.

Van Koeverden has been an athlete ambassador for Right to Play since 2004 and it was his involvement with the organization, and a chance meeting with New Central principal Merrill Mathews, that brought three-time Olympic gold medalist to the school Monday.

Mathews and van Koeverden were having breakfast in the same restaurant during the summer. Mathews approached the Olympian and told him about his own interest in Right to Play and asked if van Koeverden would come to the school to speak. Mathews based the school’s three pillars — be good to yourself and others, do your best and get involved — on Right to Play’s philosophy.

“Having Adam here helps kids make that connection. The conversation becomes more real,” Mathews said. “They’ll go home and when they’re asked about what they did in school, they can talk about this. It’s something to get the conversation started.”

Van Koeverden has started the conversation among his fellow competitors. At the 2007 worlds, van Koeverden raced in a kayak with Right to Play’s logo as the focal point.

“The goal was to spark some interest in philanthropy,” van Koeverden said.

Tim Brabants, a doctor and a gold medalist at the Beijing Olympics, inquired about the organization and soon after signed on as an athlete ambassador.

In his role as an ambassador, van Koeverden made a trip to Liberia  — one of the more than 20 countries in which Right to Play has established programs — in 2007 to experience the organization’s work first-hand. There, he saw students, 65 in the lone classroom, studying in school with tin walls, sitting on boxes that they used to carry their books.

Van Koeverden said the trip’s purpose was to inspire athlete ambassadors to continue to promote the organization and its projects. And it certainly worked.

“It was an enlightening experience,” he said. “Just to see the optimism and hope they hold on to despite their living situation and the challenges they face.”

Mathews now hopes van Koeverden’s presentation will inspire his students.

“They’re more inquisitive and hopefully the result will be more critical thinking,” Mathews said.

“When Adam talks about mosquitoes and malaria, maybe it gets them thinking ‘Why does it kill people?’”

And more importantly, Matthews said, it will inspire them to take action.

It appears that has already started. As van Koeverden began a question and answer session, he called on Abby, a Grade 5 student.

“What can we do to help?” she asked.

::PANAMERICANOS:: mexico city

Ola from Mexico City!  A gigantic team Canada has been down (and up, way up) here in Mexico City for the better part of this week working our way through the preliminary rounds of the Pan Am qualifier for next year's Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

It's my first trip ever to Mexico!  Seems crazy to me... lots of my teammates have been here to race, but I've never managed to make it down to our other North American neighbour for any reason.  Such a beautiful country! Now that I've been I suspect I'll be back very soon...

With a slightly more relaxed race card than I'm used to, with no 500m races, and no semi-final rounds, you'd think it would be a walk in the park... but thanks to the altitude (over 7000ft), any pace over 80% (or just walking up the stairs) leaves me gasping for some beloved oxygen.  Nonetheless, I think I'm getting used to it, and I'm looking forward to a solid full body burn in the 1000m final, and the 5km which is this afternoon!

Here's a pic from the Pyramidas, this one is for the sun god, we climbed to the top, and questioned whether or not we'd be doing the CN tower stair climb later this month as a result.

More news to come... thanks for checkin' in!! (visit the twitter for news on the go...)

::canadian national canoe and kayak championships::

My 14th Canadian Champs were one of Burloak's best ever, and I'm so incredibly proud of all my black-clad burloaker teammates.  We raced hard, raced happy, bounced back from any crummier races we had, encouraged eachother, laughed and cheered and sincerely had more fun than ever before.  War Canoes and C4's were a highlight, strong performances in Midget Canoe and Juvie girls were awesome to see, we had a 9 year old boy on the podium (Way to go Matt), a 47 year old Olympian on the podium (Larry, a few times!), and lots of strength in all age categories in between.  Our throwback-to-Oakville-Racing gear was an all round hit, I think Tessa has a future in fashion (or kayaking!!).  Senior Women's K4, AHEM!  Mark O coxed some awesome War Canoes, and paddled his canoe pretty well too.  Senior War Canoe was so hard I couldn't believe it.  Brady lead our K4 from the back, Mehak stroked like a veteran, Pellini showed us he's still the teamboat man, K2 rocked.  Way to go boys!

I think we need a trophy case in the bigroom at Burloak!

I'm so fortunate to be a member at such a stellar club.  Not just because we perform well, but because it's always fun.  It's a tough trek home straight from Worlds the day after, but as soon as I arrive and see our whole club putting all the hard creek work to task, I quickly realize that it's the only place in the world that I want to be that week.

Thanks to everyone from every club (especially Wascana) for making this CCA's an awesome one, thanks to CKC for puttin' on a good show, and most of all... Go Burloak Go!

See you on the creek.
